Fracture Evaluation & Design System (FEDS)

FEDS is a numerical simulator created to design & evaluate hydraulic fracture treatments. FEDS, an acronym for Fracture Evaluation & Design System, was initially a project undertaken to create fracture design optimizations on spreadsheets using published literature. During our research of published models, several  limitations of current models specifically when modelling fracture height growth in asymmetric multi-layer formations were identified. In attempt to remove these limitation, we started working on a new frac model, culminating our hard-work in form of FEDS.

Instead of re-inventing the wheel, we utilized the equilibrium height concept to design our own frac growth workflow. Two novel features were added in the model, real-time geomechanical properties correlation - to enable fracture geometry modelling in asymmetric layers and frac height cross-section plotter - a technique that divides frac in stated number of units, conducting height calculation for each unit and calculating real fracture height away from the wellbore. This model is named "Quasi-3D Frac Model" and its working is published in SPE-185302.

FEDS also incorporates a nodal analysis module. Similar to frac model, while conducting history match of several frac treatments we identified a significant gap between post frac production predicted by commercial simulators and actual production. To improve production predictability of FEDS, we coupled wellbore hydraulics, VLP & IPR generation module with frac model so production from frac is not modelled in isolation and effects of water hold-up, gas slippage etc. is accounted for in overall production prediction.

FEDS was initially designed in MS Excel later heavily augmented by Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to process numerical calculations. The idea was to make it usable on any machine without requiring formal installation. Currently we are re-designing the software on Visual Basic to remove dependency on MS Excel. FEDS is a free-to-use software with commercial grade technical support.
