In many unconsolidated and lose sand reservoirs sand production is a common phenomena. Sand production is always undesirable since it causes loss of production, costly work overs due to completion integrity issues and damage to surface production setup. Different methods are engineered to arrest or curtail sand production like; Mechanical methods, chemical treatments and operational control.
Following methods are commonly used to minimize the impact of sand production
> Gravel packing around the production zone - Mechanical Method
> Stand alone liners or screens- they act as a filters & can be used as the sole means of controlling sand production- Mechanical Method
> Pumping resin coated gravels- When exposed to heat, the resin cures, resulting in a consolidated sand mass
> Flow the well below erossional rates to avoid erosion of well bore and completion jewelry
> Minimize draw down so that sand production could not be triggered rapidly
> Install screens/sand traps at the surface just after well head so that produced sand could be arrested immediately after production and could not damage surface equipment
